Scarce in any condition. Reddish cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Library binding, green shield to front. Boards are rubbed with some marking. Corners are bumped, board edges worn. Spine is age darkened with bumping to top and bottom. Page edges are rough cut. Age discolouration to endpages. The REP is stamped 'Purchased from the Library' but this appears to be the only ex-library mark. Some fox to the textblock. 499 pp. There are 8 plates (including the frontispiece) and 2 facsimile letters. They are all present but not always in the correct place for example the frontispiece of Ferdinand De Lesseps is facing page 259. When securely packed this item will weigh in the region of 933g.
