Book Description: Sir James Carmichael-Smyth, 1st Baronet, KCH, CB (22 February 1779 – 4 March 1838) was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. Brown half leather boards with gilt lettering to spine. Boards are marked and generally grubby. Front board is detached. Corners are bumped and worn exposing the board beneath. Board edges are rubbed. Spine has bumping to ends. Front endpages are torn. Some foxing to both endpages and throughout. Previous owner's mark to FEP and title page. 248 a description of the jail distemper as it appeared amongst the Spanish prisoners, at Winchester, in the year 1780; 4 pp appendix; 109 pp report of the experiment made with nitrous acid for stopping the progress of contagion, as executed on board the Union Hospital ship, at Sheerness by Mr Arch Menzies, surgeon. 2 pullouts.
